Investment Casting Service

Investment castings, sometimes called “precision investment casting or lost wax casting”, is a manufacturing method used with metals. We also call it “Precision Castings”.It involves pouring molten metal into a hollow mold shell. The shell is created by an “investment” of ceramic materials, built around a wax model.

The investment casting process makes it possible to create complex parts with exceptional surface qualities and accuracy in a wide range of materials and sizes.

However, if a part requires intricate details, the material is reinforced by fiber or wire, we would use a specific type of investment casting method. This investment casting technique is called “vacuum casting”.

Investment Casting Process

1. Create a wax pattern

The first step is to create a master pattern before anything.  This step can take several hours or several days. Usually, CNC machining or rapid prototype technology will help engineers with this process.

2. Make a  wax pattern tree for investment casting

Many wax patterns can be connected and poured together producing many same castings in a single process, so attaching the wax patterns to the central sprue. It is called a pattern tree.

3. Making the molds shell

Casting molds are made of liquid silicone. Silicone is poured around the master pattern inside of a casting box. Once silicone over the pattern is thick enough, it is allowed to dry in air in order to harden.

4. Place Investment in Oven

Placing it in an industrial oven. This causes the wax removed out of the mold, leaving the cavity for the metal casting.

5. Pour Metal into Mold and Remove

Casting material can now be poured into the empty cavity to create a highly accurate part.Then remove Cast Metal Parts.

6. Finishing Processes

The cast metal parts are clean and accurate as expected. Common finishing processes: CNC machining, heat treatment, grinding, blasting, anodizing
